Derby Daily Express, 9th June 1916:
At the time of the report in the newspaper, Reuben Coles was aged 21, and was the fifth youngest of six sons who were serving in the Army. He was employed at Derby Arboretum, and upon his death, Mr. T. Husbands, the superintendant of the Arboretum wrote to Reuben's parents testifying 'to the good nature, honesty, and willingness of the lad.' He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Coles of 15, Hampden Street, Derby.

1911 Census:
Reuben Coles was a 15 year old gardener, residing at 12, Newdigate Street, Derby. He was the son of Ernest Coles, a bricklayer's labourer, and Georgina Coles.
